Sierra Leone, Guinea, Cote d’Ivoire and the Mano River Union countries of Liberia are set to construct 1,303-kilometer transmission line and substations in member states.
According the general manager of TRASCO-SLSG, Mr. Mohammed Sheriff, the energy project which is going to be the biggest project with an affordable energy interconnectivity to the MRU basin, will consist of the construction of 1,411 km of high-voltage transmission lines, with an extension to the existing high voltage sub-stations in Mahn, Ivory Coast, Sanniquellie, Buchanan and Monrovia in Liberia; Nzerekore and Linsan in Guinea and Bumbuna in Sierra Leone.
The progress of this new project, which is sponsored by the World Bank, African Development Bank, Kuwaiti Fund and European Investment Bank, streams from an earlier approved contract for the transmission project which the authorizes of TRANSCO-CLSG told the Mano River Union leaders that six out of nine contracts for the transmission line and substations have been signed, which now birth the beginning of this project that will regulate the expansion of electricity in the Mano River Union and by extension the sub-region.
President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf at the groundbreaking ceremony said, “This is our project and we have to appreciate all those who made it a success. At the end of this project, the people in the four countries will see electricity very cheap. And I am happy that they are already providing jobs for people of our member countries.”
This new development will bring the four conflicting states together since they have been engaged in the same regional electricity market by an interconnection system.
