The United nations (UN) and African Union signed a new agreement recently to boost their collaboration on a range of global issues. Secretary General, Antonio Guterres said strong cooperation with the African Union (AU) is essential for the United Nations.
After signing the new AU-UN framework for the implementation of Agenda 2063 and the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development, the Secretary-General said that across the three main pillars of the United Nations – development, peace and security, human rights in the African continent is key to solving global problems.
The United Nations recognizes Africa as a key player in the successful development of the international community and as an instrument to secure lasting peace and security in the global community. “We will be side by side with the African Union in respecting African leadership in solving African problems to help in this regard said the Secretary-general applauding Africa for its admirable strides in human rights.
The UN chief also commends African countries for keeping its doors open to refugees and migrants, adding that this is a lesson other parts of the world could learn from.
