UNGA 2024: South Africa’s Ramaphosa Leads Global Call for Ceasefire and Conflict Resolution

  • 0

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa took a strong stand against global injustices, particularly focusing on the ongoing Middle East and Africa conflicts at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) 2024. In a passionate speech, Ramaphosa urged world leaders to take decisive steps to promote peace and end violence, calling for an immediate ceasefire in conflict zones. His address was a stark reminder of South Africa’s history of apartheid and its moral obligation to support oppressed peoples worldwide.

Ramaphosa invoked the struggles of South Africa under apartheid, aligning it with the current plight of the Palestinian people. He emphasised the need for global solidarity in fighting against the injustices they face, noting that “we South Africans know what apartheid looks like. We lived through it. We suffered and died under it. We will not remain silent and watch as apartheid is perpetrated against others.”

This reference to apartheid was not just a historical reminder but a direct call to action. Ramaphosa stressed that the international community must act through the mechanisms of the United Nations and uphold international law, stating, “International law cannot be applied selectively. No one state is more equal than any other.”

Ramaphosa’s speech also highlighted South Africa’s efforts at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), where they sought an order to prevent genocide against the people of Gaza. In his words, “The ICJ’s orders make it clear that there is a plausible case of genocide against the people of Gaza.” He further reiterated that it is not only Israel’s responsibility to prevent genocide but also that other states must act to ensure they do not violate international laws by aiding or assisting in such atrocities.

Ramaphosa’s call for an immediate ceasefire in the region was unequivocal: “We reiterate our call for an immediate ceasefire, and for the release of all hostages.” He emphasized that the only lasting solution is the establishment of a Palestinian state, existing side by side with Israel, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Global Peace and Security: A Collective Responsibility

Beyond the Middle East, Ramaphosa addressed the ongoing conflicts in Africa, including in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, and the Sahel region. He argued that achieving lasting peace requires a collective effort by the global community, stating, “Achieving and maintaining peace and security requires the collective will of the community of nations.”

He called for urgent reform of the UN Security Council, criticizing its outdated structure and lack of representation for Africa, saying, “Seventy-eight years since its formation, the structure of the UN Security Council remains largely unchanged. Africa and its 1.4 billion people remain excluded from its key decision-making structures.”

Beyond Ceasefires: Addressing Root Causes of Conflict

Ramaphosa also highlighted the importance of addressing the root causes of conflicts through mediation, diplomacy, and economic development. He acknowledged the African Union’s ongoing efforts in conflict resolution across the continent and stressed the need for greater collaboration between the AU and the UN.

His speech also touched on critical global issues, such as the climate crisis, pandemics, and economic inequality. He emphasised that peace cannot be achieved without addressing these interconnected challenges, noting that “economic prosperity is key to sustainable peace.”

Reforming Global Systems for a Just Future

Ramaphosa’s address closed with a powerful call for reforming global systems to promote fairness and equality. He endorsed the UN Secretary-General’s call for reform of the global financial architecture, pointing out that developing countries, particularly in Africa, are burdened by debt that hampers their growth. “Debt servicing is robbing countries of much-needed funds for health, education, and social spending,” he said, advocating for more equitable systems that allow developing nations to thrive.

In 2025, South Africa will assume the presidency of the G20, and Ramaphosa pledged to use this platform to continue advocating for Africa and the Global South. He concluded by emphasizing the need for international solidarity, stating, “Solidarity is the lifeblood of human progress. It binds us together to nourish the greater good.”

Ramaphosa’s speech at UNGA 2024 was a resounding call for peace, justice, and global reform, urging the world to stand united in ending conflict and promoting equality. Through his leadership, South Africa continues to play a critical role on the world stage, advocating for a more just and inclusive global order.
