The Executive Director National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), Prof John Opuda Asibo, has recently warned university vice chancellors to stop awarding professorship.
“Start passing through proper vetting process. These days you find everybody is a professor. The award is not given but earned,” he said.
Prof Asibo, who was speaking at the closure of a two-day validation forum of the Draft Uganda High Education Qualifications Framework in Mukono Town, said vice chancellors have made it a free opportunity to unnecessary award professorships honours to everyone. The honour, Prof Asibo said, can only be awarded to senior lecturers through a guided process and vetted by NCHE.
In most Commonwealth nations, the title professor is the highest academic rank at a university.
Professors typically hold a PhD, another doctorate or a different terminal degree, conduct research and commonly teach undergraduate, graduate or professional courses in a particular field of expertise.
At the same function Education Minister Jessica Alupo said the Draft Uganda High Education Qualifications Framework seeks to demystify vocational education.
“The attitude towards vocational and technical education will be demystified. As the ministry we increased sensitisation and more children are enrolling,” she said
