Following the plans of Uganda governments to safeguard the country’s degraded wetlands which have affected over 3.2 million people who depend on it for livelihood and food security, the government and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have signed an agreement of $42.2m (Shs150b) to restore the degrading wetlands.
The fund is also targeted towards improving ecosystems, strengthen climate information and early warning systems in Uganda.
According to Finance minister Matia Kasaija, at the completion of the project, the people’s livelihood will be improved and wetland dependent communities will enjoy increasing resilience.
“We have destroyed this country environmentally. Those who are entrusted with this money should use it for the purpose for which it has been agreed,” he said.
The minister has also urged all government ministries, departments and agencies to direct funds and budgets towards the execution of the project.
