Parliament on Tuesday rejected a bill seeking two five-year terms for the current president. Following this failed attempt, a referendum may be imminent.
The bill was not approved on Tuesday by the parliament because the majority of the lawmakers were against the bill except one who backed the bill. The bill allows incumbent Faure Gnassingbe, who is already in his third term to have an additional two five-year terms which will leave him in power till 2030.
Incumbent Faure Gnassingbe and his family have held the seat of power in Togo for 50 years.
“They voted for a referendum but we don’t care. We’ll set the streets against their referendum,” said Pedro Amuzun, an official at the main ANC opposition party, which announced more protests on Wednesday and Thursday in the capital Lome.
