As part of efforts to meet the needs of the labour market of textile industries in Tanzania, the government has recently directed Vocational Education and Training Authority (Veta) colleges to improve their training system in order to produce competent graduates in tailoring.
The call was made by the Vice-President, Ms Samia Suluhu Hassan, when talking to the management and workers of Mazava textile industry, which specializes in manufacturing sportswear.
During her tour she observed production activities at the factory located in Morogoro Region. She said the government stresses the improvement of the industrial sector in order to increase and create employment opportunities for the youth and other groups in the country.
“Therefore it is the duty of Veta and other institutions to ensure that they produce knowledgeable and skilful graduates who could be competent in various labour markets including tailoring,” she said.
The Vice-President said one of the government plans is to have many industries in the country, so the duty of Veta and other colleges is to impart adequate skills to the youths who complete primary and secondary education.
She said due to the necessity of improving industrial sector, the government will make sure VETA provides many chances to youths so that they are trained in tailoring skills. The upshot is to get employed in textile industries in the country.
Ms Samia also has urged employers in the country to make sure they give permanent contracts to their workers and consider salary payments that conform to the labour law.
Earlier the Assistant Manager of the industry, Mr Nelson Mchukya, said the industry has employed 2,500 workers, out of whom 87 per cent are women.
