Sunday Sylva Togo Echono, the Executive Secretary of TetFund, has been honored with the African Leadership Excellence in Education Development of the Year award at the 14th African Business Leadership Awards (ABLA) 2024. This accolade recognizes his significant contributions to transforming the educational sector in Nigeria under his administration.

Appointed as the Secretary-General of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) by the Buhari-led administration, Mr. Sunday Echono has overseen numerous landmark projects aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s educational landscape. Under his leadership, TETFund has funded 5,525 physical infrastructure projects, 188 equipment fabrications, and the establishment of 576 faculty and departmental libraries in tertiary institutions nationwide.

 

The Fund has also completed 13 Senate Buildings in 12 universities and one polytechnic, as well as 19 library buildings in 14 universities, three polytechnics, and two colleges of education. Additionally, 74 projects have been commissioned across various beneficiary institutions under Mr. Echono’s tenure.

 

Mr. Echono is a seasoned architect, civil servant, and educationist. He has held various roles, including serving as Secretary of Committees and working in the Budget Monitoring and Price Intelligence Unit (BMPIU), also known as the Due Process Office.

 

The African Business Leadership Awards, hosted annually by the African Leadership Magazine, celebrate outstanding achievements and contributions in Africa’s business sector. These awards recognize individuals, companies, and institutions for excellence in leadership, innovation, and their impact on the continent’s economic development, reflecting ALM’s commitment to highlighting often overlooked aspects of Africa’s business and leadership.

Since its inception in 2016, the summit has showcased innovative projects and practices that align with the continent’s development goals.

 

The 2024 ALM Africa Summit, themed “Africa Unleashed: Navigating Disruptions, Enhancing Opportunities,” provided a forum for leaders to discuss sustainable development pathways for Africa. Esteemed speakers included The Right Hon. Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa, Speaker of the Liberia House of Representatives; Dr. Olavo Correia, Deputy Prime Minister & Minister for Finance of Cape Verde; The Right Hon. Lord Dollar Popat, UK House of Lords Member & Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to Rwanda, Uganda & DRC; and H.E. Rindra Rabarinirinarison, Minister of Economy & Finance of Madagascar. These leaders, along with other distinguished guests, addressed key issues impacting Africa’s business and socio-economic landscape.

 

This year’s summit saw notable attendees sharing valuable insights, experiences, and success stories from their business journeys in Africa. Participants explored new strategies and partnerships to advance Africa’s prosperity, with panel discussions focusing on mobilizing the public-private sector as a catalyst for sustainable progress. Attendees also had opportunities to collaborate and showcase investment opportunities within Africa.
