In Senegal, the national soccer team are still heroes – despite losing in the AFCON final on Friday – Senegal’s “Lions of Teranga” received a warm welcome in Dakar, where thousands of fans thronged the streets to welcome them.
Thousands of supporters thronged the capital’s streets. Waiting late into the night to cheer the players as they returned home. It took the squad four hours to weave through the crowds on a 10 mile-drive from the airport to the presidential palace.
Senegalese President Macky Sall was also there to welcome them.”We cannot criticize a team that has played and lost a final. We must encourage it, urge it to learn from its experience and immediately get to work to win the continent’s cup in two years time, God willing.”
The Lions of Teranga lost 1-0 to Algeria’s Fennec Foxes on Friday (July 19) at the Africa Cup of Nations final.It was the second time ever the team made it to a final.The last appearance was in 2002, when Senegal lost to Cameroon.
