The Rwandan Ministry of Infrastructure and Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation (ROSATOM) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will enable cooperation between the two countries in the field of peaceful use of atomic energy. The consensus was reached and signed by the representatives of both parties. Nikolay Spassky, the Deputy Director of ROSATOM and Director of International Affairs signed on behalf of Russia while Jeanne d’Arc Mujawamariya, Rwandan Ambassador of Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Russia appended for Rwanda.
This Memorandum of Understanding is the first bold step that has been taken by both countries towards the peaceful use of atomic energy. The agreement establishes legal basis for the implementation of bilateral cooperation in a wide range of areas, including the development of nuclear infrastructure in Rwanda and the development of programs prioritized towards raising awareness of nuclear technologies and their applications, and also the use of radioisotopes and radiation technologies in manufacturing, agriculture and healthcare.
Both countries will make available groups that will work together to identify specific projects within cooperation. Also the preparation of the framework Intergovernmental Agreement between them is expected to follow suit.
