New York, USA— Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, Prime Minister of the Republic of Uganda, was honoured with the prestigious Global Inspirational Leadership (GIL) Award at the Global Power Women (GPW) Yearbook 2024 event. In addition to receiving this distinguished award, Nabbanja delivered a keynote address to a distinguished audience of global women leaders and changemakers.
The Global Power Women Yearbook (GPWY) 2024 event took place on 25th September 2024 at the Graduate Centre, City University of New York (CUNY), under the theme “Advancing the Transformative Power of Technology through Women’s Lens: Shaping the Future of Business and Governance.” Organised by the Centre for Economic and Leadership Development (CELD) in collaboration with Amazons Watch Magazine (AWM), the event brought together influential women leaders from around the globe to celebrate their achievements, share insights, and discuss the pivotal role of women in shaping the future of business and governance through technology.
Having served as Prime Minister of Uganda since June 2021, Nabbanja is widely recognised for her transformative contributions to Uganda’s socio-political landscape and her steadfast dedication to public service. With a leadership journey spanning more than two decades, she has played a pivotal role in shaping policy development, governance, and health reforms in Uganda.
A Legacy of Public Service and Leadership
Born in Kakumiro District, Nabbanja represents her district in Uganda’s 11th Parliament as the District Woman Representative. Her public service career predates her role as Prime Minister, with notable positions such as Minister of State for Health (General Duties) from December 2019 to June 2021, where she contributed significantly to Uganda’s healthcare policies. She also served as Parliamentary Commissioner (2016-2019), where she streamlined parliamentary operations, and as Resident District Commissioner in Busia, Budaka, and Palisa districts (2001-2010), focussing on grassroots governance and community development.
Global Inspirational Leadership Award: Recognising Excellence
The Global Inspirational Leadership Award recognises female leaders who have demonstrated visionary leadership, impactful governance, and a commitment to empowering communities. Nabbanja’s extensive contributions to public health, social welfare, and democracy in Uganda have positioned her as a formidable leader advocating for sustainable development across the African continent. Her keynote address reflected her resilience, her vision for Uganda’s future, and her insights on the role of women in global leadership.
Nabbanja joined other esteemed female leaders, including the Prime Minister of Italy, Dr. Filomena Gonçalves (Minister of Health, Cape Verde), and several First Ladies, such as H.E. Rossana Maria Briceño of Belize, H.E. Leticia Ocampos of Paraguay, H.E. Dinisia Dos Reis Embaló, (Guinea-Bissau), H.E Arya Devi Ali (Guyana) and Dr. Isaura Nyusi of Mozambique. Other keynote speakers and awardees included Mansa Nettey (CEO of Standard Chartered Bank, Ghana), Olive Birungi Lumonya (Deputy Director General, Uganda Civil Aviation Authority), Abby Huang (Founder/CEO of Dime Inc.), Ms. Damilola Ogunbiyi (CEO & Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Sustainable Energy for All and Co-Chair of UN-Energy), Mary Ellen Iskenderian (President/CEO of Women’s World Banking), Ruthe Farmer (Founder of Last Mile Education Fund), and Amira Youssef (VP of SocialPost). Together, they shared their visions for a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable world.
