Kassim Majaliwa Majaliwa, the Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania, addressed the United Nations Assembly, emphasising the importance of hope, peace, and sustainable development.
The Prime Minister praised the UN’s theme of ‘leaving no one behind,’ aligning it with Tanzania’s ambition to foster peace and promote sustainable development for future generations.
He acknowledged the significant challenges posed by climate change and pandemics, which have severely impacted health and economic systems. In light of these global crises, the Prime Minister called for urgent international solidarity as the key to overcoming these obstacles.
During his speech, Prime Minister Majaliwa expressed concern over the slow progress in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with only 17% of targets currently on track. He stressed the need for immediate global action to address this shortfall.
Tanzania, he noted, is focusing on economic growth through strategic investments in agriculture, infrastructure, and the digital economy. These efforts aim to enhance food security, reduce poverty, and create jobs, particularly for youth and women, to drive inclusive growth.
Majaliwa highlighted the importance of vocational training and education in preparing young people for the demands of the job market and the digital economy. He underscored that developing a skilled workforce is essential for the country’s long-term economic success.
The Prime Minister also reaffirmed Tanzania’s foreign policy commitment to human dignity, opposing colonialism and racism, and supporting self-determination for oppressed nations. Tanzania has a long history of supporting liberation movements and continues to advocate for the UN’s role in promoting human dignity and addressing global crises.
Looking ahead, Tanzania will host the African Energy Summit in January 2025, with the goal of providing electricity to 300 million people by 2030. This initiative aims to unlock Africa’s energy potential and contribute to a sustainable future.
Majaliwa also touched on Tanzania’s upcoming local and presidential elections, which reflect the country’s commitment to democracy and human rights. The government is focused on fostering unity and reconciliation among diverse political groups.

In addition, Tanzania is pursuing reforms to enhance transparency, inclusiveness, and accountability, particularly in international institutions. These reforms, the Prime Minister noted, are vital for effective governance and improved global cooperation.
