The traumatising incident at an illegal oil refinery in Nigeria’s South Eastern Imo State which left at least 100 dead, has been described by Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari, as a “catastrophe and a national disaster.”
President Buhari, in an address released by his Media aide, Garba Shehu, offered words of comfort to the families of the victims. He also assured them that those responsible for the illegal oil refinery will be caught and made to face the full wrath of the law.
Following the fatal blast which left a horrendous sight of charred bodies, reports have disclosed that investigations are ongoing, as the police are now out to hunt down the owner of the illegal oil plant.
Over the years, the government of Nigeria has battled to curb the menace of secret illegal oil refineries operating within the country.
However, due to the high level of unemployment, poor governance, and the get-rich-quick syndrome, illegal crude refining has continued to thrive as an attractive business in the country.
