To enable women contribute their quota to National development and play their God-given role in the society, women and female professionals gathered at the University of Lagos to seek equality with their male counterparts.
Speaking at the Second Lecture Series of International Women’s Day 2016 yesterday, Chairman of the occasion, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye, urged the women folk to rise and seek their right to serve in political offices as their male counterparts.
According to her, women should seek elective positions in the next election, as Nigeria’s next president can equally be a woman. She, however, decried the abduction of the girl-child, rape, violence against women and all forms of molestations being meted out to them.
At the event titled: International theme: “Planet 50-50 in 2030, Step it up for gender equality”; Campaign theme: Pledge for parity”, Mrs. Oladunjoye, who was the state Commissioner for Education, while craving equity for women, urged them not to neglect the fact that the men are their heads, as doing so is tantamount to neglecting their cultural values.
She decried the fact that women fail to mentor others, which is a contributory factor to why they have not been able to rise above their male counterparts in their chosen careers.
Also, the first female provost of the College of Medicine, who represented the UNILAG Vice Chancellor, Prof. Folashade Ogunsola, urged women to move into the political scene as their impact will be better felt to correct the ills in the politics of the country. She decried the lack of mentoring among the womenfolk, as according to her, this has hindered them in many areas of advancement.
