President Muhammadu Buhari in his return speech Monday has issued a stern warning to those advocating for the separation of Nigeria stating that the country’s unity is not negotiable.
In the last few month, several activist groups have held rallies which have been seen as a threat to national unity.
The president stated that while he was away for medical care he was abreast with the happenings in the country and was concerned about the turn-out of things.
“I was distressed to notice that some of the comments, especially in the social media have crossed our national red lines by daring to question our collective existence as a nation,” said Buhari.
“Nigeria’s unity is settled and not negotiable. We shall not allow irresponsible elements to start trouble,” he said, adding that some ethnic violence was “fuelled by political mischief makers”.
Buhari called on all security agencies in Nigeria to continue to defend Nigeria from separatists. He also called on Nigerians to face the challenge of economic insecurity.
