The federal government of Nigeria recently received a proposal from a United Nations human rights committee to devise more strategies to the recovery of the remaining Chibok girls still held in the Boko Haram net. The UN committee also urged the government to ensure that the girls are cleaned up and referred back to school without the stigma of the experience.
Although a hundred of the girls have been released, about a hundred are still under the torture of the militant group. The UN committee, therefore, urges the Nigerian government to intensify all efforts to speed up the release of the other girls.
“The Nigerian government should intensify its efforts to rescue all women and girls abducted by Boko Haram insurgents, ensure their rehabilitation and integration into society and provide them and their families with access to psychological and other rehabilitation services,” said the U.N. panel of 23 experts.
“Of course we commend Nigeria for the rescue of 100 of them who are currently, we’re told, kept in Abuja, going through psycho-social counseling,” a panel member added.
270 girls were abducted by the Boko Haram militant group in April 2014, about a 100 were released and 60 escaped, but over 80 girls are yet to be released, this has led to the withdrawal of many girls in the northeast from schooling due to the insurgency and schools must be secured to protect students”, the panel said.
