Malawi is set to enjoy improved power supply following fresh agreements with neighbouring country Mozambique. It is projected that by 2018 the two countries will kick-start the construction of the USD120 million power lines linking Mozambique and Malawi.
The project includes the construction of a 218 Kilometres high voltage powerline with the capacity to transmit 200 megawatts.The project, which was supposed to start in 1998, has been delayed until recently as a result of insufficient funds as explained by the former president of Malawi Bingu wa Mutharika.
Meanwhile, power exports from Mozambique to Malawi may be established finally in 2022 if the project suffers no delay.
This project will attract the payment of US$480,000 per month by Malawi for its electricity, but based on the 2017/18 Malawi fiscal year, USD18 million has been allocated for the energy sector.
The allocation is to help grow the sector into a competent one that can serve the nation.
“Energy is a catalyst for socio-economic development. In this regard Malawi is implementing programmes and projects aimed at improving energy generation, transmission, and distribution,” Malawi President Peter Mutharika said in his state of the nation.
In addition to that other developments are being included in the plan.
