The UN women have set activities in motion to prepare Liberian women towards the country’s forth coming general election. The organization recently concluded a successful workshop session, where over 50 women were trained in politics and given adequate information to build political capacity that, will encourage them to compete with their male counterparts.
The three-day event which was planned in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender Children and Social Protection. During the event, the women were given media platforms to practice responding to political issues that may arise from the opposite sex. They were also engaged in debates and given updated strategies for the forth coming election.
Present at the event was the head of the Election Coordinating Committee (ECC), Mr. Oscar Bloh who was the facilitator of the event. He encouraged the women to be self-confident and never be intimidated by their male contemporaries.
“You need to tell the people why you want them to vote for you and stop the normal politics of attacking people for no reason, avoid calling the names of your incumbent and tell them what you can do for them,” he said.
Many other facilitators came on board to encourage the women including President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf who visited the women briefly to speak and encourage. She told the women to go as far as taking over the “capitol building” if they cannot take the presidency.
It was an unforgettable event for the women who were really excited to be at the center of an empowerment program.
