A large number of Liberians came out to the polling units to exercise their civic rights in first election run entirely by the country’s institutions and security forces since the civil war.
The turnout among the 2.1 million registered voters was high, John Mahama, the head of an observer mission from the Economic Community of West African States and a former president of Ghana, told reporters in the capital, Monrovia. He also stated that the elections were peaceful.
Election officials have started counting ballots after polling stations closed in presidential and parliamentary elections.
