South Africa’s Kevin Anderson leads Team World’s charge against a formidable Team Europe in this weekend’s Laver Cup exhibition event in Chicago.
Anderson, the world No 9, is the highest-ranked member of Team World who also feature Americans John Isner (world No 10), Jack Sock (No 17) and Frances Tiafoe (No 40), Argentina’s Diego Schwartzmann (No 14) and Australia’s Nick Kyrgios (No 27).
Team Europe features Switzerland’s Roger Federer (No 2), Serbia’s Novak Djokovic (No 3), Germany’s Alexander Zverev (No 5), Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov (No 7), Belgium’s David Goffin (No 11) and Britain’s Kyle Edmund (No 16).
Team Europe is captained by Swedish 11-time Grand Slam winner Bjorn Borg, while America’s John McEnroe, a seven-time major winner, is in charge of Team World.
The event marks a bit of a homecoming for Anderson who spent two years at the University of Illinois.
Kevin Anderson in reiterating his excitement stated “My wife’s family is from just 20 minutes north of here.”
The event is named in honor of tennis legend Rod Laver, who won a record 200 singles titles (52 listed by the ATP), 11 Grand Slams and five Davis Cups for Australia.
