The Cabinet has authorized a cholera vaccination exercise targeting 2 million people in Kenya.
This was revealed via Press Release after a meeting chaired by President William Ruto, the country’s top decision-making organ.
According to the release, these are high-risk areas and all Kenyans have been urged “to continue exercising high hygiene standards as was prescribed at the height of Covid-19 disease containment measures”.
The statement mentioned an increase in cholera infections in the country with a number of casualties in a recent outbreak within Nairobi.
“Cholera is an acute diarrheal illness caused by infection of the intestine with Vibrio cholerae bacteria.
“People can get sick when they swallow food or water contaminated with cholera bacteria.
“The infection is often mild or without symptoms, but can sometimes be severe and life-threatening,” it read.
It also stated that the vaccination will be carried out in Nairobi, Machakos and Garissa.
