Safety of the students of Nairobi University which is Kenya’s oldest university is a priority to the school management and this has led them to the decision of closing down the school until the end of a planned violent protest.
The protest which is about to take place is as a result of police brutality and extrajudicial killings following the Aug. 8 election, whose results were later nullified by the Supreme Court due to irregularities.
Last week the Police stormed dormitories and classrooms in the university, dragging out students, beating them with clubs and firing tear gas, because they had protested against the arrest of an opposition lawmaker.
As a result of the demonstration, the student had planned to retaliate against the beatings but instead, administrators shut down the University for Safety purpose with hopes to re-open after the tension ceases.
