The increasing spate of global conflict and array of threats confronting African Nations in recent times continues to beckon on new approaches and a pooling of ideas to re-shape a more comprehensive and conclusive front. Besides the deep-rooted challenges of violent crimes ranging from communal clashes, kidnapping, political violence, armed robbery and other aspects of criminal threats, Islamist militancy has been very active in select African nations, particularly in Somalia, Kenya, Mali, Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroun, Chad and Nigeria where Boko Haram is fighting to establish a ‘pure’ Islamist state based on Sharia law, killing thousands of people in attacks on schools, army bases and churches.
Terrorism is also fast spreading to other neighbouring countries in the West, East and North Africa. This further poses greater threat and highlight the need why Africa must begin to deepen ideas and strategies on how to combat terrorism particularly as regional peace and sustainable security can never be achieved in isolation.
