New York, USA— At the Global Power Women (GPW) Yearbook 2024 conference held on September 25, 2024, at the Graduate Centre, City University of New York (CUNY), Her Excellency Rossana Maria Briceño, Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children in Belize, was honoured with the prestigious Global Female Impact Leadership (GFIL) Award. In addition to receiving this accolade, Briceño delivered an inspiring address, sharing her insights on education, gender equality, and social advocacy with a global audience of influential female leaders.

Under the theme “Advancing the Transformative Power of Technology through Women’s Lens: Shaping the Future of Business and Governance.” Organised by the Centre for Economic and Leadership Development (CELD) in collaboration with Amazons Watch Magazine (AWM), the event brought together influential women leaders from around the globe to celebrate their achievements, share insights, and discuss the pivotal role of women in shaping the future of business and governance through technology.

H.E. Rossana Briceño is widely celebrated for her lifelong dedication to education and advocacy. With over 33 years of experience in special education, she has spearheaded transformative initiatives aimed at improving the lives of society’s most vulnerable members, particularly children and women.

A Legacy of Inclusive Education and Advocacy

Since her appointment as Special Envoy for Families and Children in January 2021, Briceño has championed numerous initiatives that have significantly impacted education, health, and social welfare in Belize. Among her contributions are programs supporting students with disabilities, such as providing specialised Chromebooks for visually impaired students and creating a scholarship program benefiting 18 high school students annually.

Advocacy for gender equality and social change

Briceño is a staunch advocate for raising awareness about gender-based violence (GBV), leading initiatives to provide legal support and resources for survivors across Belize. Her advocacy also focusses on improving the health and welfare of Belizean citizens, including efforts in cervical cancer screening and mental health awareness. Her leadership has been instrumental in revising the Health and Family Life Education curriculum and advancing social programs aimed at empowering Indigenous women through financial literacy and training.

The Global Female Impact Leadership Award recognises women leaders who have made substantial contributions to their communities and beyond through visionary leadership and impactful governance. Briceño’s extensive contributions to education, gender equality, and health have earned her a well-deserved place among the world’s most influential women leaders.
