The African Leadership Magazine’s Good Governance Poll has taken a dramatic new twist as Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, leads as best performing governor, with 72.61% of the total votes cast.
The Good Governance Poll 2017 will close at 4 pm on Friday. The Poll commenced 2 weeks ago after the Magazine announced a list of 8 nominees, selected based on their various performances on four (4) core criteria- Security, Economy, Infrastructure, and Accountability.
Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, who was leading the poll, is trailing behind Governor Willie Obiano with 16.8%; while Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike is maintaining the third position with 6.22% of votes, as at press time.
In the fourth place, Aminu Tambuwal, Governor of Sokoto State, and Ben Ayade, Governor of Cross River State are in a tie, with 1.24 per cent votes; Umar Ganduje, Governor of Kano State, and Rochas Okorocha, Governor of Imo State, are also at a tie with 3.37 per cent of the votes, in the fifth position.
Kashim Shettima, Governor of Borno State, sits in the sixth position with 0.24% of the total votes.
The Magazine’s Good Governance Poll was initiated in 2016 with the aim of promoting good governance and engendering healthy competition between Nigerian governors towards delivering the dividends of democracy to the people of Nigeria.
The 2016 inaugural winner was Lagos State’s Ambode, who received the special award, presented by His Excellency, Peter Mutharika, President of the Republic of Malawi, at the Iconic St. Regis Hotel New York, on the margin of the 2016 United Nations General Assembly.
The winner of the 2017 poll will be conferred with the African Leadership Excellence Award and decorated with the Best Performing Nigerian Governor Medal, during the magazine’s international Summit on African Leadership, billed to hold on September 21st, at the margins of the United Nations 72nd general assembly, New York 2017. The first runner-up will also receive a commendation award in New York.
