Dr. Walton Ekundayo Gilpin is the CEO/Managing Director of Sierra Leone’s Rokel Commercial Bank. He is a highly successful man who has made substantial contributions to finance and banking. Here are some of his recent honours:
He was named the Business Leader of the Year in 2021 for his excellent contributions to the business world and his leadership role at Rokel Commercial Bank.
Commander of the Rokel Order (COR): On April 27, 2021, President Julius Maada Bio bestowed the Commander of the Order of the Rokel (COR) upon Dr. Walton Ekundayo Gilpin, one of Sierra Leone’s highest honours. This honour recognises his substantial achievements in turning around Rokel Commercial Bank’s fortunes, as well as his competence in managing complicated banking policies and processes.
Dr. Gilpin is an internationally recognised financial specialist with over 30 years of experience managing business houses and complicated policies in banking and banking-related institutions spanning Africa, Europe, the South Pacific, the Caribbean, and the United States. He has previously worked for the Bank of Sierra Leone, the Commonwealth Secretariat, and consulted for the International Monetary Fund (IMF). His knowledge has been used in financial research analysis, training module design, and offering technical advice to national and international organisations.
Rokel Commercial Bank has developed new measures to enhance financial inclusion and convenience in Sierra Leone under Dr. Gilpin’s leadership. The “Rokel Sim Korpor App,” an electronic mobile banking programme that connects users to their bank accounts via their mobile phones, is one such endeavour. This app has transformed banking in Sierra Leone by offering 24-hour access to accounts and increasing financial inclusion.
Empowering Women in MSMEs: Under Dr. Gilpin’s direction, Rokel Bank awarded a loan of 101 million Leones to Krootown Road Market Women in 2022 to empower women in Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). This project reflects the bank’s commitment to assisting women-led business growth.
Dr. Walton Gilpin Ekundayo’s accomplishments at Rokel Commercial Bank highlight his exceptional leadership, financial expertise, and commitment to fostering economic growth and financial inclusion in Sierra Leone, which led to him being named one of the African Leadership Magazine’s (ALM) 25 Top Financial Leaders in Africa for 2023.
