The Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the 2018 Total Africa Women’s Cup of Nations
(AWCON) headed by Hon. Freda Prempeh (MP) has announced that all preparations have been completed for the tournament to open in Accra on Saturday, November 17, 2018.
Ghanaian musicians Noella Wiyaala and Grace Ashy are billed to perform at the opening
ceremony which will be graced by high-ranking officials from the Confederation of African
Football (CAF) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
Eight national teams are participating in the biennial tournament which is in its eleventh edition. It will run for 15 days and end on December 1, 2018.
Black Queens, the host nation team, takes on Algeria in the opening match. This will be followed by a clash between Mali and Cameroon to complete Group A matches. Nigeria will take on South Africa while Zambia will take on Equatorial Guinea for the Group B matches.
At the end of the tournament, the winner, second-placed and third-placed teams will represent the continent at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup to be hosted by France in June 2019.
