The leader of Angola’s opposition party UNITA has again threatened to hold street protests if election results are dimmed to be unfair. He assured Angolans that there is no way voting for his party will result in another war.
Isaias Samakuva, the 71-year-old leader of UNITA party, during his last campaign, called on the National Electoral Commission to ensure a fair vote. However, he threatened that if the election result is found to have been manipulated or inaccurate, his party will hold street protests.
Election campaigns for the various parties contesting the election ended on Monday, August 21. The ruling MPLA with its Presidential candidate as Joao Lourenco dos Santos – a former Defense Minister held its final rally on Saturday, main opposition party UNITA with its candidate as Isaias Samakuva held its final rally in the country’s capital Luanda while the second opposition party CASA-CE held its final rally on Saturday.
UNITA was a former rebel group transformed into a party, the party which is currently led by Isaias Samakuva, have said they would be willing to form a coalition government with other opposition parties if the MPLA lost power.
