Before now, direct air travel between Nigeria and Algeria has been virtually non-existent, forcing travellers to endure long layovers and detours. That is about to change. In a major breakthrough for regional connectivity, Algeria’s national carrier, Air Algérie, is set to launch direct flights to Nigeria. This long-awaited move is expected to strengthen economic ties, boost tourism, and deepen diplomatic relations between the two nations. More than just a new route, this development symbolises a new chapter in North and West African cooperation.
Ministerial Dialogue and Approval of Services
The foundation for this landmark initiative was laid through productive discussions between Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and Algeria’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Hocine Mezoued. Their meeting earlier this year focused on revitalising the Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA), which had previously restricted direct air travel primarily to the Algiers-Lagos route. Substantial progress was made in expanding this agreement to facilitate flights between Algiers, Abuja, and Douala, Cameroon.

A key milestone in these negotiations was the approval of a Foreign Carrier Operating Permit (FCOP) by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), granting Air Algérie authorisation to operate commercial flights linking major cities in Algeria, Nigeria, and beyond. This approval, secured following a meeting between NCAA’s Director General, Capt. Chris Najomo, and the Algerian Ambassador, paves the way for Air Algérie’s direct flight operations.
Enhancing Regional Connectivity: Economic and Diplomatic Benefits
The introduction of Air Algérie’s direct flight service is expected to have a transformative impact on Nigeria-Algeria relations. It is anticipated to enhance regional connectivity, facilitating smoother travel for business, tourism, and trade between these two emerging economies. Given the vast potential both nations hold, the direct air route will serve as a crucial link, making it easier for entrepreneurs, tourists, and investors to explore opportunities across both countries.
Both Nigeria and Algeria recognise the importance of aviation partnerships in fostering economic integration within Africa. By launching this direct flight service, Air Algérie will operate its Boeing 737 aircraft on the newly established Algiers-Abuja route, significantly reducing travel time and logistical barriers for passengers. This improved accessibility is expected to boost not only tourism but also trade and investment—key drivers of economic growth for both nations.
A Step Forward for Bilateral Relations
As air travel continues to play a vital role in economic development, the reopening of the Algiers-Lagos route and the introduction of the new Algiers-Abuja route represent a crucial step towards deeper bilateral relations. This initiative highlights both countries’ commitment to working collaboratively to unlock the socio-economic potential within their respective borders.
The launch aligns with broader objectives of fostering integration and unity across the African continent, demonstrating how collaborative ventures in aviation can stimulate economic activities. The renewed BASA not only sets the stage for enhanced travel but also encourages shared investments across key sectors such as healthcare, technology, agriculture, and tourism—further solidifying the Nigeria-Algeria partnership.
The introduction of Air Algérie’s direct flights to Nigeria is more than just a transportation initiative; it is a significant diplomatic achievement that promises to strengthen ties and promote economic synergy between two of Africa’s largest economies. Anticipation is building not only for the inaugural flight but also for the numerous opportunities that will emerge from this enhanced connectivity. This development exemplifies how aviation can serve as a conduit for peace, cooperation, and progress across the African continent.
