THEME: the Future of Africa; Young people speak.
Africa has the world’s youngest population, with 60 percent of the population under the age of 25. Some see this demographic divide as a barrier to the continent’s growth, while we at African Leadership Organization see it as an opportunity. To promote transformation, young people are advancing pioneering ideas. We believe that additional opportunities for young people to develop their skills and leadership abilities are needed; only then will we, our communities, and our countries attain our full potential.
There is a new breed of young Africans in Africa who have the confidence to start new initiatives while also being humble enough to carefully listen to the people they aim to serve. The capabilities, mindset, and actions of this growing group of young leaders will be the most crucial long-term drivers of change in Africa. The African Youth Conference is designed with the intention of working with young people as partners. This demonstrates the need of listening to young people and involve them in problem-solving, policy development, and long-term change. They have their own aspirations of a brighter future for Africa and are eager to put in the effort to make those dreams a reality.
The ALM 40 Under 40 Listing is all about boosting young people’s voices and initiating collective action. Africa will require – and benefit from – several waves of innovation and exploration for decades to come. Many African countries are already making progress.
