Somalia’s Prime Minister, Hamza Abdi Barre, addressed the United Nations General Assembly, focusing on the pressing global challenges of peace, humanitarian aid, and climate action.
During his speech, he highlighted that the assembly is grappling with critical issues, including transnational conflicts and climate change. He emphasised the importance of unity and swift action to safeguard human dignity, stressing the need for international cooperation in addressing humanitarian crises, particularly in Sudan.
Prime Minister Barre reiterated the assembly’s theme of ‘leaving no one behind’, underlining the significance of inclusive dialogue and collaboration to meet the needs and aspirations of vulnerable populations. He stressed that collective action is vital for achieving sustainable development.
The Prime Minister drew attention to the escalating humanitarian crisis in Sudan, where millions have been displaced. He called for the urgent protection of civilians, adherence to international humanitarian law, and an immediate cessation of hostilities.
He further raised concerns about Ethiopia’s aggressive actions, which, he argued, threaten Somalia’s territorial integrity and national unity, thereby exacerbating regional tensions. These actions, according to the Prime Minister, undermine peace efforts and embolden terrorist groups such as Al-Shabaab.
Prime Minister Barre urged the international community to take decisive action against violations of sovereignty and support efforts to achieve lasting peace. He argued that upholding international law is essential for regional stability, and Africa’s security depends on mutual respect for these principles, particularly regarding Ethiopia’s conduct.
On peacekeeping efforts, the Prime Minister called for sustainable funding to support counterterrorism and state-building initiatives in Somalia. He emphasised that reliable financial backing is crucial for transitioning from merely maintaining peace to achieving long-term stability.
He also advocated for reform of the United Nations Security Council to ensure better representation of voices from Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Such reform, he argued, would enhance the UN’s effectiveness in addressing global challenges.
Somalia is pushing for reforms in global institutions to better support developing nations and meet the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Prime Minister Barre underscored the importance of international cooperation and accountability in this context.
Among Somalia’s recent achievements, he noted the completion of the debt relief process and the country’s accession to the East African Community. These developments, he said, mark a new era of regional integration and cooperation.
Somalia has also made significant progress in governance and security, reclaiming territory from terrorist groups and prioritising national stability—key steps towards fostering economic growth. The country is now focusing on renewable energy, agricultural potential, and sustainable fishing as part of its strategy to achieve self-reliance and prosperity.
Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre’s address was a clear call to action for global cooperation and collective responsibility. His message of peace, humanitarian aid, and climate action highlighted the urgency of working together to tackle global challenges and secure a sustainable future for all.
