Mauritius’ President, Prithvirajsing Roopun, addressed the UN General Assembly, emphasising the need for international cooperation to protect human dignity, promote peace, and uphold justice. He called for global collaboration to resolve conflicts, tackle climate change, and ensure inclusive governance.
President Roopun expressed Mauritius’ pride in the appointment of Ambassador Philemon Yang, a distinguished son of Africa, as President of the 79th UN General Assembly. He stressed the importance of advancing Africa’s development and completing the decolonisation process of Mauritius. He also underscored the necessity of upholding universal values of peace, justice, and human dignity in the face of mounting global challenges, calling for a united international response to conflicts and injustices.
Roopun highlighted the moral responsibility of the United Nations to honour the sacrifices made during wars and to ensure that peace and justice prevail, which he identified as crucial for global stability. He expressed concern over the alarming rise of impunity and the erosion of human rights, particularly among the most vulnerable populations, warning that this trend threatens the very foundation of international law.
The President also pointed to the unprecedented technological revolution, emphasising the need for international governance of artificial intelligence under the framework of international law to ensure that its transformative power benefits humanity. He argued that addressing unsustainable consumption trends is essential to give both small and large states a voice in global institutions, fostering equity and ensuring a resilient world where human dignity is upheld.
President Roopun further stressed the significance of promoting decent work for all, with a particular focus on the empowerment of women and youth, which he stated remains central to the government’s policies. He highlighted how these inclusive approaches have strengthened Mauritius’ social fabric.
Moreover, he called for the establishment of a collective, quantified climate goal, which he described as vital for vulnerable nations, especially Small Island Developing States (SIDS), in their efforts to combat rising temperatures. Roopun noted that this goal would serve as a lifeline for humanity’s survival. He also referenced a recent advisory opinion from the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, which underscores the need for climate action guided by science and intergenerational equity, aiming to compel states to take meaningful steps.
In his address, President Roopun described Africa as a continent rich in untapped opportunities and cultural diversity, united in purpose and poised to contribute to global solutions for a more equitable and sustainable world.
He appealed to France to resolve territorial disputes in a spirit of friendship, reflecting the importance of diplomatic relations between nations.
