Africa boasts some of the most promising sports leagues globally. While top Western leagues such as the NFL, NBA, EPL, MLB, La Liga, Serie A, UEFA, and Bundesliga are currently considered the best in the world, this status may soon be challenged.
According to a report by Sports Value, the top 14 sports leagues worldwide generated a remarkable US$80.6 billion in revenue in 2023. This figure was derived from an extensive eight-year study of major sports competitions and leagues around the world.
Professional sports leagues in Africa are diverse, encompassing a range of sports including football, basketball, and various local games. They are increasingly gaining popularity and international recognition.
The African Football League, which features teams such as Egypt’s Al Ahly and Tanzania’s Simba SC, began its inaugural season in 2022. This league was established during a visit by FIFA President Gianni Infantino to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, marking the 80th anniversary of TP Mazembe. Infantino proposed that Africa’s top 20 clubs should compete in a unified African league. He also suggested that this league could generate revenues of $100 million, positioning it among the top ten leagues worldwide. Furthermore, Infantino announced a campaign to raise $1 billion to build football stadiums in every African country that meet FIFA’s specifications.
Additionally, new leagues are emerging, including women’s sports leagues, contributing to the continent’s vibrant sports culture. The recognition of African talent and market potential is growing, evidenced by the expanding presence of the NFL and NBA in Africa.
