Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, Managing Director of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) of Ghana, receives the Africa Energy Leadership Commendation Award at the 2024 International Forum on African-Caribbean Leadership (IFAL). This award was received during a gathering of prominent leaders from Africa and the Caribbean, centered on the theme, “Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships to Drive Transformation towards Sustainable and Resilient Societies.”
Dr. Abdul-Hamid, who was elected President of the African Refiners and Distributors Association (ARDA) in March 2023, has been at the forefront of Ghana’s petroleum sector since his appointment as CEO of the NPA in July 2021. His leadership is marked by a commitment to implementing significant reforms within the Ghanaian petroleum downstream industry.
Before his role at the NPA, Dr. Abdul-Hamid served as the Minister for Inner City and Zongo Development from September 2018 to January 2021, where he spearheaded initiatives to enhance the economic and social conditions of low-income communities. He also held the position of Minister of Information and Presidential Spokesperson from January 2017 to August 2018, overseeing all government communications.
Since taking charge of the NPA, Dr. Abdul-Hamid has launched numerous initiatives aimed at regulatory efficiency, including the repeal and replacement of the NPA Act. He facilitated the implementation of a Ghanaian content policy for the petroleum downstream industry, ensuring the sector’s sustainability and enhancing international collaborations to promote petroleum product exports. His vision aligns with Ghana’s goal of becoming a leading petroleum hub in the region.
In addition to his executive role, Dr. Abdul-Hamid is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Religion and Human Values at the University of Cape Coast, where he contributes to academia through extensive publications in scholarly journals. He is known for his integrity and commitment to public service, holding a Doctor of Philosophy degree, a Master of Philosophy degree, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Cape Coast.
