The Chinese embassy has presented relief materials which included 40 sewing machines to enhance the living standard of victims affected by the June flash floods that overwhelmed parts of the Gambia.
The presentation ceremony was held at the Chinese Embassy.
Recall that the June flash floods affected over 14,000 households and 100,000 people within the municipality. It was in light of this that the Municipality wrote to many partners to solicit support on behalf of those affected.
Receiving the items, Talib Ahmed Bensouda, mayor of the Kanifing Municipal Council, acknowledged with appreciation the support from the Chinese Embassy, saying ‘the Chinese Embassy is the first foreign body to respond to the flood victims of the Kanifing municipality.
The donation was a gesture by the Chinese Embassy not only to support the flood victims but also to help instil skills among young people to enable them to enhance their livelihood, he added.
Mayor Bensouda maintained that the Chinese Embassy has always been strengthening the cordial ties that bind the peoples of both countries.
Bensouda also said that his municipality is looking forward to further deepening ties with other cities in China.
“We appreciate your gesture and we are looking for all types of support such as food, blankets, and clothing. We wrote to many partners, but the Chinese Embassy is the first diplomatic body to actually respond to our call for aid,” he emphasized.
He assured me that the money and items donated would be put to good use.
Presenting the items, Liu Jin, Chinese Ambassador to The Gambia, said he was delighted in receiving the Mayor and his team, noting that The Gambia and China are good friends and reliable partners.
“I am happy to donate the cash and sewing machines to the Kanifing Municipality and I believe it would be of good use to the beneficiaries through the Mayor’s efforts. We both agree to exchange the cooperation between the local authorities in the two countries, and there would be mutual understanding to promote the mutual friendship between the people of these two countries.”
