The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has assigned a team of experts to South Sudan to help design social safety nets for the country.
According to the National Minister of Finance and Planning, Dier Tong Ngor, it is expected that the delegation will meet different financial institutions during their visit to Juba. Tong revealed this after the team met with President Salva Kiir and the IMF’s Deputy Director for Africa Affairs Department, Cathy Patillo.
He noted that the expected IMF team of experts would meet the country’s financial institutions to design social safety to protect vulnerable households.
“We discussed a number of issues with the president and Cathy to speed up the support the IFM is providing to South Sudan and stress issues of reform as well as the importance of economic stability in South Sudan,” he said.
He stressed that economic stability is what makes investors come to the country and can grow the benefits for the citizens of South Sudan.
Patillo said the IMF was ready to extend necessary support to help the South Sudanese government respond to global economic challenges such as food prices, inflation, and food security.
“We had a very fruitful meeting with the President of the Republic of South Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit, about the strong reform and programs that the government has taken forward, and the importance of continuing those efforts to support growth and the ability of the government to help the citizens of South Sudan,” she said.
