The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has extended a second call to Amina Mohammed to continue in her role as the Deputy Secretary-General of the organization following his reappointment by the UN General Assembly for a second term in office. Guterres reappointed her with utmost regard, saying: “After being elected, I have the pleasure to invite the deputy Secretary-General to remain in my second mandate and I hope she will accept”.
Mohammed’s reappointment as Deputy Secretary-General of the organization for a second mandate confirms her drive and commitment to see the world become a better place as she continues to strengthen her legacy around the globe with activities that border around sustainability and development.
In a glamorous career, spanning decades, Mohammed has served as a diplomat and politician in local and international scenes. Previously, she was Nigeria’s Minister of Environment from 2015 to 2016. She has also served as the special adviser to Ban Ki-moon on post-2015 development planning which focused on the 2030 agenda for sustainable development goals.
Mohammed is of Nigerian heritage as she was born in Liverpool to a Nigerian veterinarian officer and a British nurse, and she is the eldest of 5 daughters. In joining Guterres for a second term, her time in office recommences officially on January 1, 2022, and will run for 5 years.
