The ministry of agriculture and the ministry of health in collaboration with UNICEF, have recently been involved in promoting a community-led total sanitation (CLTS) programme in various communities in Namibia.
As part of efforts towards sanitation in Ohangwena, the management of the joint Onambutu School has decided to support this movement by promoting menstrual hygiene among school girls, through the provision of sanitary pads and sensitizing of the boys about menstruation.
According to the principal, the previously held workshops by the CLTS have helped the school achieve success in keeping the girls in school through various initiatives.
The school’s principal Ester Mbango briefed the team on the progress the school has made in different areas, including building toilets, installing water points for pupils to wash hands and, especially, in menstrual hygiene management.
“I can proudly say that after the workshop we received in CLTS by UNICEF we have done a lot and have achieved much. This workshop changed a lot of lives, within the school and in the community,” said Mbango.
