As part of efforts to improve Nigerians’ access to electricity, the Government of Japan has recently extended the aid of JPY 1.990 billion ($US 16.6 million) to the Government of Nigeria for the emergency repair and overhaul of one of the generator units of Jebba Hydro Power Station
The project completion ceremony was held in Jebba Hydro Power Station in Niger State, with the Japanese Deputy Head of Mission in Nigeria, Mr. Masaya Otsuka and representatives of the implementing partner, the Federal Ministry of Power, Works, and Housing in attendance.
The project with allow the generator to provide 100 MW to Nigerians. Successive loan project to refurbish four of the generator units is under consideration.
The people and the Government of Japan hope the project will enable more Nigerians to have improved access to power and thus will contribute to sustainable development and poverty reduction in Nigeria.
Creating an inclusive society for growth through providing support for the power sector is one of Japan’s priority target areas at TICAD V (Fifth Tokyo International Conference on African Development).
