The United States has recently re-affirmed its partnership with Nigeria to implement the Security Governance Initiative (SGI), a comprehensive security master plan aimed at defeating terrorism and security threats, in Nigeria.
US Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle, who made the revelation in Abuja when he paid a visit on the Minister of Interior, Abudulrahman Dambazau, in his office, said the initiative is the brainchild of the homeland security.
The Ambassador said his country has concluded plan to send a team to Nigeria by January, to grow in the spirit of partnership with Nigeria as part of efforts to end all form of insecurity in Nigeria and the world at large.
“We are ready to partner with you on security. As you know the Security Governance Initiative (SGI), we will be having a team here in January in this regard”, he said. “This is a very interesting idea; it is an attempt to approach the need to reform democracy in order to improve security performance. This project will be done with Nigerian government.”He assured the minister of total support to combat insecurity.
Responding, the minister of Interior who expressed gratitude to the US ambassador, assured that Nigerian government will partner with the US to ensure fruitful implementation of the project. He said, “we want to assure you on our own part that we will fulfill our own part on partnership and we are confident that you will fulfill your own part also”.He described the SGI driven by the U.S embassy, as a holistic and mutually beneficial inter-agency collaboration between the U.S and Nigeria.
The ministry of Interior is the heartbeat of Internal Security and superintends over the Nigerian Police, Prisons, Immigrations, Civil Defence and the Fire Service.
